Wülfrath is located in the largest limestone mining area in Europe. An extraordinary natural landscape has developed here in already closed quarries. A refuge for rare animals and plants has emerged. The discovery loop starts at the time tunnel in Wülfrath and takes you around the Schlupkothen quarry with unique views.

Strollers and hikers can experience the Schlupkothen quarry, which has been closed down and reclaimed by nature. The rugged cliffs and the turquoise-green water of the groundwater lake are fascinating. If you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of owls nesting in the quarry. Remains of old industrial plants are reminiscent of the former limestone extraction. Those interested can stand directly above the water surface on a viewing platform. A nature and industrial history trail leads around the quarry. It is recommended to circumnavigate it on the way back.

The discovery loop turns into a forest area. Hikers walk through a wild and romantic forest, which changes its color from lush green to all possible shades of gold in autumn. If you take your time, you will always discover new facets of the sometimes mystical tree population. The path continues past the edge of the field on the PanoramaRadweg Niederbergbahn to the "Schlupkothen Cathedral". From here it goes back through the forest to the quarry and from there through the nature reserve to the starting point. A visit to the Wülfrath time tunnel or the idyllic Niederbergische Wülfrather old town is also worthwhile.
