NEANDERLAND/METTMANN CIRCLE. The sixth event will begin with a joint opening hike on Saturday, April 18th. neanderland Hiking week has started. More than 300 participants set off from Café Op dem Kamp in Erkrath in sunshine and temperatures up to 19 degrees Celsius in the shade for an approximately nine-kilometer tour through the Neander Valley.
The district administrator of the Mettmann district, Dr. Bettina Warnecke, opened the hiking week and also joined in the hike herself. It was her first time participating: “The neanderland “The hiking week shows how much there is to discover right on our doorstep. Especially in a group setting, completely new perspectives on one's own region often emerge,” said the district administrator at the opening.
The route led through the springtime Neander Valley along the Düssel River and across the "Human Traces" sculpture trail. Nature and art alternated throughout: installations between meadows and forests offered ever-changing perspectives on the landscape and history. At the Ice Age Wildlife Enclosure, participants experienced tarpans, bison, and aurochs up close – re-bred specimens of extinct animal species that provide an impression of the animal world of the last Ice Age. At rest stops, participants could refresh themselves or learn all about bees and honey.
To round off the day, the group stopped at Café Op dem Kamp. With freshly baked cake, bratwurst, cold drinks, new acquaintances, and cheerful conversations about the hike, the day came to an end.
The neanderland The hiking week runs until April 26th. A total of around 80 guided tours are on the program, including options for families, herb walks, and mindfulness hikes. Registration for some tours is still possible at short notice.
