Neanderthal Museum

museum/exhibition
Not far from the site where the world-famous Neanderthal skeleton was found more than 160 years ago, is one of the most modern museums in Europe. The Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann is located in the middle of the Neanderthal valley of the same name, the oldest nature reserve in Germany. The museum is one of six highlights of the Neandertal world of experience.
In a multimedia permanent exhibition Visitors from all over the world are introduced to the prehistory and early history of humanity, from its beginnings in the African savannahs more than four million years ago to the present day. This journey through time is illustrated with life-size and faithfully reconstructed Neanderthal figures and a baby mammoth.

Regularly changing Special Exhibitions on a wide variety of human-historical topics complete the offer. Whether old or young, numerous hands-on stations, exciting workshops and guided tours ensure an unforgettable experience in the fascinating world of the Stone Age.

The stone age workshop invites young explorers in particular to actively explore the living environment of early humans in a playful way. Under expert guidance, those who are curious can try out Stone Age handicraft techniques and create their own cave paintings - also as a Stone Age birthday party. Directly opposite the museum is a unique and adventurous world of experience including a water feature: Auf dem stone age playground Children let off steam and at the same time make connections to primeval times and the Neanderthals.

A visit to the Reference with the new adventure tower "Höhlenblick" complements the museum tour. The approx. 22 meter high tower with a domed roof in the shape of a Neanderthal skull offers a view through virtual telescopes on a viewing platform right back to Stone Age history.

Im charming museum cafe is a relaxing way to end an exciting stay in the Neanderthal Museum.
