The Marienkapelle, which is also called the Chapel of the Sorrowful Mother, is located directly on the banks of the Rhine in Monheim am Rhein and is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in the Archdiocese of Cologne.
As early as the Middle Ages, sailors attributed miraculous significance to the location on the Rhine and the special current at this spot. Against this background, a shrine with an image of the Virgin Mary was built here in the 12th century. In 1418, a wooden chapel was finally built, which was replaced by a late Gothic stone chapel around 1514. The chapel is now a single-nave brick building with a cross-ribbed vault and a three-sided choir. Since the Middle Ages, many people have made pilgrimages here to pray at the miraculous image of the Sorrowful Mother, the Pieta.

The Marienkapelle is part of the Monchronik.
