The pilgrimage church "Mary, Queen of Peace", better known as St. Mary's Cathedral, was designed and built between 1966 and 1968 by the renowned architect Gottfried Böhm. The building impresses with its monumental concrete structure, which stretches over the wide interior like a sculpturally folded tent. With a height of around 30 meters, the cathedral appears massive and dynamic from the outside, while the interior conveys an almost meditative atmosphere.
A special feature of the Mariendom is the impressive interplay of light and concrete. The colorful windows, designed by Wilhelm Buschulte, immerse the room in a changing play of light that reveals new facets depending on the time of day and the incidence of light. The large rose window on the entrance front and the side window strips in particular add colorful accents to the otherwise raw concrete walls. This deliberate reduction to material and light creates an extraordinary sacred atmosphere.
The Mariendom is the second largest church in the Archdiocese of Cologne after the Cologne Cathedral and an important centre of Marian pilgrimages. Every year thousands of pilgrims come to Neviges to take part in the solemn services or simply to experience the special architecture. Its location on the neanderland STEIG makes it a popular destination for hikers who enjoy nature and culture in neanderland want to connect with each other.
