The Marienburg was built by the Cologne architect August Carl Lange around 1879 as a summer country house for the Cologne lawyer and politician Eugen von Kesseler. The model for the building was the medieval Marienburg in Malbork, Poland. Today, the stately villa is privately owned and is used as a conference and congress center or as a wedding location.
The 1,7 hectare Marienburg Park, on the other hand, is open to the public. Designed in the style of an English garden, it is home to a very old tree population. Visitors can enjoy an idyllic stroll there and explore a grotto and the Marienpavillon. The park was redesigned for the Decentralized State Garden Show in 2002 and has since been part of the "Garden Art Route between the Rhine and the Maas". The playground in the park is a real highlight for children. Under the motto "Knights, Princes and Princesses", there is a small knight's castle with a slide, swings, rocking animals and much more.
Since 2023, a multi-part work of art by the American artist Robert Wilson has also been found in the park. Under the title "Yes There No Where", guests can move between a fairytale landscape of sculpture, architecture, light, text and music. A small house on the meadow, surrounded by three sound fountains, attracts not only adults but also families with children to explore. The well-known Monheim writer Ulla Hahn wrote texts especially for this installation, which were set to music. The work was created as part of the sound art exhibition "The Sound - Sonic Art in Public Spaces" at the Monheim Triennale 2023.
The Marienburg Park is also part of the Monchronik.
