Old mayor's office and city history house in Mettmann
Since 1980, the house, with its historic rooms, has been available for receptions, celebrations, award ceremonies, exhibitions, and weddings. A large part of the building now houses the Mettmann City History Museum, where visitors can explore the history of the city on three floors – from its first documented mention and the construction of the royal court to the Nazi era.
Numerous exhibits in themed rooms offer insights into the lives of the city's inhabitants in earlier times. The meticulously reconstructed historical rooms are particularly impressive, including an old schoolroom, an original barbershop, and a 19th-century bedroom. These lovingly recreated everyday environments fascinate school groups, who visit the museum regularly. But adult visitors also appreciate the many carefully arranged details that bring history vividly to life.
In addition, visitors receive exciting information about the geography and geology of the region, as well as about limestone mining in the Neander Valley, where the remains of the Neanderthal were discovered in 1856.
