At the gates of the large cities along the Rhine, Ruhr and the Bergisches Land is the Neanderland. Its name stands for tourism and culture of the district Mettmann with the cities Erkrath, Haan, Heiligenhaus, Hilden, Langenfeld Mettmann, Monheim on the Rhine, Ratingen, Velbert and Wülfrath.
The idea of marketing the district of Mettmann under the neanderland trade mark was developed in the late 1990s, following the unique first find site of the Neanderthal. Since the beginning of March 2013, neanderland has now become a tourist destination. The famous native is the focus of the unique Neanderthal Museum near the site in the Neandertal. The region around the world-famous valley is today an attractive destination for nature lovers, culture lovers, recreation seekers and active people of all ages.
Day and weekend tourists as well as families and school classes will find numerous excursion destinations and offers for a small holiday in front of the doorstep. The fact that neanderland with its ten cities is attractive for guests, show the rising overnight numbers. Also in the year 2016, the accommodation companies in neanderland were able to look forward to more guests: 990,000 overnight stays were measured. Compared to the previous year, overnight stays rose by approx. 2.8%. And since 2013 - the introduction of the brand neanderland in its present form - growth of 10% has been recorded.
