Erkrath

The gateway to the Neandertal

Erkrath - the town where the world-famous Neanderthal man was found! The Neandertal, which extends through the town of Erkrath, among other things, is not only a spacious recreational area, but was also the site where skeletal parts of primeval humans were found in 1856. The Homo sapiens neanderthalensis was then named after the place where it was found in the former limestone quarry, which can still be visited today.
